Circumstances (Circunstancias)

On November 27, 2017, police instigated an international manhunt in the search of Zeyad Dyab, a forty year old male from Syria accused of violently stabbing his wife (31) to death.

It is unclear when the incident occurred, and she may have died some time before the 27th. Her brothers contacted police on November 26 to request a health check when they did not hear from the young woman or her children after several days. The investigation led them to the family’s apartment on Felberstraße in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus where police discovered the wife’s body. She had been stabbed more than ten times in what was clearly a vicious attack; the knife was still lying beside her body.

Zeyad had a reputation for domestic violence and there had been a restraining order issued against him as well as multiple entry bans that year. He was receive psychiatric care since April of that year and completed his treatment on October 20th, the month prior to the murder. Due to repeated violent assaults, his wife was planning to divorce him but for some reason cancelled the paperwork.

Police have not revealed the precise motive behind the crime, but there is concern for the safety of the couple’s four young children. Mobarak (11), Tabarak (8), Ghazal (6) and Malak (5) disappeared the same day and are believed to have been taken by their father when he fled the crime scene. According to a neighbor, Zeyad appeared at the apartment a few days prior unexpectedly. He brought the children, but left them outside while he went into the home. When he came outside, he had suitcases with him. He took the children and left. It is not clear if this is when police believe the wife was murdered (Link). None of the five family members have been seen since.

Zeyad and his wife were refugees from Syria living in Austria at the time of the murder and it is possible he fled either back to Syria or to another country. He may contact other Syrian refugees in Europe if he is still there. There is some suggestion that Zeyad may have left for Greece via the Vienna Airport on November 25, two days prior to the discovery of his wife’s body. He may have then returned to Syria via Turkey. The reason for this line of thinking has not been revealed (Link).
