Дане Мемеди (Dane Memedi) and Мирсада Хелдовиќ (Mirsada Heldovic) were two of three young children who vanished in the year 2010 in North Macedonia. Both children of similar ages disappeared from the same Roma settlement approximately two weeks apart in what may have been related cases.

The nightmare began when seven year old Mitat Ibrahim (Митат Ибраими) disappeared from his home in Sredno Konjari in the region of Skopje (Средно Коњари – Скопје). The circumstances behind his disappearance are unknown but when he disappeared on March 19, 2010, Mitat was wearing a green tracksuit shirt with blue jeans and brown boots. (NQL Case File)

Then, just a few days later and less than twenty miles away, Dane Memedi (Дане Мемеди), a local four year old Roma boy, disappeared on March 27, 2010 from the Sredorek settlement in the town of Kumanovo (Куманово). He was playing outside with a wheelchair in the yard of their home when his family last saw him, wearing white corduroy pants and a colorful sweatshirt the day he disappeared. (NQL Case File).

Then, just two weeks following Dane and from the same Roma settlement in Sredorek, five year old Mirsada Heldovic (Мирсада Хелдовиќ) vanished from her home on April 12, 2010. She was wearing a red blouse, blue jeans, and black sneakers when she disappeared. She too was taken from her family’s yard while playing outside. (NQL Case File).

There were rumors of a suspicious black jeep with Bulgarian license plates loitering near the Sredorek settlement in the days surrounding Dane and Mirsada’s disappearances (Link). None of the children have been seen since, but it is highly possible that one or more of them were trafficked into a neighboring country (or possibly further abroad over time). The families believe that not all possible efforts were taken in the investigations due to the children being ethnic Roma and that it is possible someone with connections or authority assisted with trafficking the children out of the country for reasons unknown.

“She was playing in the yard, and suddenly she disappeared. We went to the police, they shrugged their shoulders . . . Now Mirsada should be nine years old. The child was taken and there is no one to help us.”
