- Rayan was traveling with his non-custodial father when he vanished. The parents were Iranian citizens from Kuwait who can to Austria in 2014. They separated in 2014, whereupon the mother obtained custody while the father had visitation. Rayan would spend the weekends (Friday to Saturday) with his father. The father is believed to have taken the child back to Iran, although he and Rayan did not have the appropriate travel documents.
