- The victim was an international law professor at Columbia University when he vanished from his home. He was a refugee from the Spanish Republic and served as a delegate for the Basque Government in New York City. He had attained his position while living in the Dominican Republic which was controlled by dictator General Trujillo at the time. The victim wrote his PhD dissertation on Trujillo's government and his commentary eventually resulted in him fleeing that country as well to New York.
