- Notes
- He originally worked with his father an an apprenticed carpenter but could not find work in Algeria. The family leared afterwards that he had secretly left on a boat headed for Europe. There were three boats that left together, one made it to Italy and another turned back. The last boat which held Raouf was lost at sea. The family looked in Tunisia but were told it was a religious holiday and they should return with an authorization from a judge. Questioning police, they were eventually told that two young men of similar age were being held in one place while the rest were held elsewhere. One family member showed a photo and the official confirmed that one of the two young men was in the photo. This confirmed that it was the same boat Raouf had left on. At 22, he and another young man Mohammed-Lamine Boukouk (22) were the youngest and would fit the description. The police later recanted their statements and the families were not allowed to see the men despite having judicial authorization. Raouf's father later arrived with an attorney and was told that the young men had 'encountered something unpleasant' but that the situation was over and they were being relocated to an undisclosed location due to charges of terrorism and that the family should no longer search for them.
