Notes
Sheila was nine months pregnant with a boy at the time; she planned to name him Renard Simmons, Jr. after his father. She was living with her sister and nieces at a home in Aliceville. It was supposed to be her due date, but she had not yet gone into labor. Her boyfriend and the child’s father, Renard Simmons visited the home and asked if she wanted to go with him on a drive. She agreed and they left the home at approximately 10:30pm (22:30); she did not intend to be gone very long. A few hours later, at 1:00am on September 2, Sheila and Hughes were stopped by police at a roadblock in Pickensville. She was not seen since. According to Simmons, he returned with Hughes to the home and dropped her off there at around 3:00am. Her sister says she never saw her return and she did not come into the home. Her purse and slippers were later recovered underneath a tree in a cotton field in Noxubee County. That would have been close to the Mississippi and Alabama state borders. Her family believes Simmons may have been involved but he has not been charged. They claim he did not want the child and that he had encouraged Sheila to have an abortion which she refused. He died in 2013 and she was declared deceased in February 2008.
