- Jean was traveling on board the ship "Professeur Emile Lagarde" under the management of the Fraissinet Fabre Company. He had become ill a few weeks before from vaccines required for the trip to Africa, suffering from a fever that caused delirium. However, that had seemingly passed and it appeared he was doing well by January 26 when he boarded in Marseilles. He was last seen on February 2 at approximately 6:00pm (18:00) in his bed talking to his chief. By 6:20pm (18:20), he had disappeared. The boat was searched and they turned the boat back to continue searching, but after an hour they moved on. He has not been seen since.
