- The victim told his mother that he was planning to go abroad with a 'sailor friend' but would contact her when he arrived safely. There were a group of seven men travelling together. On May 29, a young man who was on the same boat called his own family and told them to call for help. They alerted the other parents and they notified the Algerian coast guard. The coast guard said they would contact the Tunisian coast guard and later told them a boat was found near Kelibia with seven men on board. When the families arrived in Tunisia, the police informed them that only one person was found and he was deceased, a man called Hadef Riad. Initially the denied that other men had been found but the families later heard that the other six were sent to the hospital and then taken into police custody. It appears they were arrested but there is no further information.
