- Notes
- Derek was last seen by his girlfriend when he kissed her goodbye and left her house that evening near 11:30pm (23:30). He would have headed home towards Bush Bank about a mile away, but it does not seem that he arrived. He was reported missing when he failed to appear for work the following morning. Derek claimed to have been attacked in October that year by an unknown man who leapt from the bushes and attempted to assault him. Derek defended himself and the man left. There were also rumors in town of an unknown man lingering in the area. Derek had also told his landlady that he had had an argument with a ‘young man from a neighboring village’ although he did not name the person. Police suspected the person in question might have been his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. The two were dating for some time but broke off their relationship about seven weeks prior. The villagers said the ex-boyfriend was furious and jealous, noting the rumors that he had been harassing and making threats against Derek that day. The man would later deny all involvement, stating that he broke up with her and was no jealous of the two. He claimed they had both made a clean break and he was dating another young woman at the time. Derek was riding his bicycle which was later located leaning against Canon Pyon Parish Hall with a blown tire. The location was close to the bus depot where Derek worked; it is not clear if he had an accident while on the bicycle or found it like that when he picked it up from work. Police were able to find remains of a dark fabric and two suit buttons in the bushes about 200 years away from the girlfriend’s home. He was also carrying clean laundry in a bag, but this was never found.
