โ๏ธ THE PLOT
‘The Mystic Nine Tetralogy’ is a set of four side-stories based in the same backdrop as The Mystic Nine. The stories are independent, but each focuses on one of the key characters in the original show (Huo San Niang, Chen Pi Ah Si, Lieutenant Zhang, and Er Yue Hong). They can be watched in no particular order and are often set as sequels to The Mystic Nine. They are certainly better understood if watched after the main series in order to be familiar with the characters and family history.
‘Four Belongs to Abelmoschus’ is the story of Chen Pi Ah Si.
Set during the turbulent Republican era, the story serves as a gritty origin tale for Chen Pi Ah Si before he became a legendary master of the Mystic Nine. Living as a cold and mercenary young man, Chen Pi operates under a strict, self-imposed rule: he will kill anyone for the price of one hundred copper coins. His path crosses with Chunsheng, a desperate young boy from a fishing village whose entire family was brutally slaughtered by the ruthless Abelmoschus (Huang Kui) Gang. Chunsheng offers Chen Pi all he hasโninety-nine coinsโto seek revenge, but true to his lethal code, Chen Pi refuses to act for a penny less.
The narrative shifts from a simple hitman story to a tale of grim resolve when Chunsheng, in a final act of desperation, sacrifices his own life to provide the “final coin” needed to complete the payment. Moved by the boy’s sacrifice and bound by his own principles, Chen Pi embarks on a solo, blood-soaked crusade to dismantle the Abelmoschus Gang. The film explores the transformation of a cynical youth into a calculated killer, showcasing the “Vigilante Justice” and “Slaughter” that earned him his fearsome reputation in the underworld.

The Grave Robber Chronicles

#๏ธโฃ There are many prequel, sequel, and side stories in the Grave Robber Chronicles universe, but this show is generally set in the era of the prequel (The Mystic Nine or Lao Jiu Men). There is an extra specifically for Chen Pi Ah Si but I am not sure if this is a retelling of that story?
The best place to find information about the original Chinese edition and the direct translation by Merebear is the translator’s website here. The first few volumes of the main story has been adapted into a series of English Translated volumes and one graphic novel.
โ ๏ธ Please Note: The shows do not directly align with either the original Chinese or the English editions. Nor do the English editions directly align with the original Chinese. Parts are spliced together, cut out, or otherwise edited to create the various adaptations.
