Synopsis

Plot
A young prodigy, born the son of the Imperial Astronomer, endures a brutal family massacre in his youth. Disappearing for a decade under the guidance of wise mentors, he hones his intellect in architecture, strategy, and courtly design. Emerging as a new identity in the capital, he ingratiates himself with the very man who orchestrated his family’s demise, weaving puzzles and solving dilemmas, from joint imperial burials to architectural crises, to ascend the political hierarchy.
Once installed at the highest levels of court as Chief Imperial Astronomer, his long‑silent plan for justice unfolds. Yet as the mystery of his past deepens, he discovers a broader conspiracy threatening the realm. With trusted confidants—including a brilliant foreign princess—he must navigate layers of betrayal, shifting loyalties, and moral ambiguity. Vengeance transforms into a higher purpose: shielding his homeland from machinations that endanger its people.

#️⃣ Originally intended to tell the story of Wang Zanghai—a legendary figure from the Grave Robber Chronicles known for creating the Snake-Eyebrow Copper Fish and designing key tombs. With Zanghai’s story featured in early unpublished chapters of the novels—the tv series underwent major changes during production.
While it still features tomb raiding and treasure hunting, it is now set in a standalone universe. Though no longer directly connected to the original works, it can be viewed as a distant, ancient prequel centered on a long-forgotten ancestor.
The best place to find information about the original Chinese edition and the direct translation by Merebear is the translator’s website here. The first few volumes of the main story has been adapted into a series of English Translated volumes and one graphic novel.
