The Storyline

The Plot

Set in the turbulent early years of the Republic of China, Southern Anecdote unfolds in the shadowy world of espionage and mystery, drawing from the rich lore of The Lost Tomb universe. The story follows Zhang Haiyan and Zhang Haixia, two skilled agents of the covert intelligence organization known as the Southern Archives, as they navigate a deadly conspiracy rooted deep within the political unrest of the Nanyang region.

When a grisly murder occurs aboard the colossal vessel Nan’an, Haiyan and Haixia are dispatched to investigate. What begins as a simple inquiry soon unravels into a far-reaching plot involving warlords, smuggling routes, and the use of a rare, lethal plant known as Dusk Grass, a biological weapon capable of silent devastation.

As the duo follows the trail of the plant and its connection to regional instability, they uncover a sinister alliance among rival factions vying for power. Their investigation leads them across perilous landscapes and through webs of deception, with each clue tightening the grip of danger. All roads point back to the ship Nan’an, where hidden truths await beneath its seemingly impenetrable decks.

Haunted by secrets and pursued by enemies, Zhang Haiyan and Zhang Haixia must rely on their wit, training, and trust in each other to expose the truth. In a world where loyalty is a rare currency and betrayal lurks in every shadow, Southern Anecdote is a gripping tale of survival, sacrifice, and the cost of uncovering buried conspiracies.

#️⃣ There are many prequel, sequel, and side stories in the Grave Robber Chronicles universe, but this show is particularly based on one of the prequels: “The Southern Archives: Cannibalism Mysteries.” The novel is set circa 1877-1878 during the period of Dingwu Qihuang, but the film switches the era to the early Republican era (1910s – 1920s).
