The Original Series

The Japanese series Nemesis introduces us to the vibrant and debonair Kazama Naoki, a detective whose true strength lies in his incredible life experience. Having worked a staggering variety of jobs over two decades, Kazama is is a charming, street-smart professional who can do pretty much anything he sets his mind to. Alongside him is Mikami Anna, the brilliant “investigative assistant”, an amateur martial artist and professional puzzle-solver. She helps piece together the subtle clues that Kazama unearths and put them together into the shocking solutions. Together with the agency’s director, Kurita Kazuaki, they form a warm, tight-knit “found family” with the friends and assistants they gather along their case trail.

The lighthearted energy of their daily work is balanced by a deep, emotional mystery involving Anna’s father, Hajime, a genius scientist who vanished under mysterious circumstances. Under the subtle guidance of Kurita Kazuaki who decides the cases they choose, Anna slowly realizes that their individual cases are actually breadcrumbs leading back to a twenty-year-old incident involving Hajime’s research. It soon becomes clear that Kazama and Kurita’s presence in Anna’s life is no accident; their protective nature and the agency itself are part of a long-term mission to keep her safe while finally uncovering the truth behind her father’s disappearance and her own secret history.

Set two years after the series, the team faces their most abstract challenge yet when Anna begins experiencing vivid, recurring nightmares of her friends being systematically targeted.
