Set during Christmas Eve in a secluded Italian mansion, the story unfolds when Marcello, the family patriarch, is discovered stabbed to death in his bedroom. The seven women present—Marcello’s wife Margherita, his daughters Susanna and Caterina, his mother-in-law Rachele, his sister-in-law Agostina, the maid Maria, and his former lover Veronica—find themselves trapped inside due to a blizzard, with the gates locked and the phone lines cut. The film serves as a remake of François Ozon’s 2002 film 8 Women, which was itself based on the play Huit femmes by Robert Thomas. Huit Femmes was a French detective comedy play first performed in 1958. It was one of Thomas’s first two plays, alongside Madame Trait d’Union (1959), both debuted in Nice with modest reception. Thomas, a playwright, actor, and director, specialized in blending detective intrigue with boulevard comedy, a style that became his hallmark.

Set in the 1950s in a snowbound bourgeois mansion during Christmas preparations, the plot revolves around the murder of Marcel, the patriarch, found dead in his bed with a knife in his back. The eight women in the household—his wife (Gaby), daughters (Suzon and Catherine), sister (Pierrette), sister-in-law (Augustine), mother-in-law (Mamy), maid (Louise), housekeeper (Chanel), and cook (Madame)—are all suspects, as the isolated setting ensures the killer is among them.
