๐ง๏ธ THE AUTHOR
The Bobbsey Twins series was originally created by Edward Stratemeyer, who wrote the first volume in 1904 under the pseudonym “Laura Lee Hope.” However, the vast majority of the books in the series were written by a team of ghostwriters employed by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. Among the more prolific contributors were Lilian and Howard Garis, who wrote many of the early volumes (including volumes 4โ28 and 41), and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, Edward Stratemeyerโs daughter, who contributed extensively later on (volumes 36โ48). Other notable ghostwriters include Elizabeth Ward, Andrew Svenson, June Dunn, Grace Grote, and Nancy Axelrad, with some volumes rewritten in the 1960s by various authors to modernize the stories.
Each ghostwriter brought subtle variations in style, but the Syndicateโs framework ensured the books maintained a consistent, wholesome, and child-friendly tone throughout the decades. The original author, Edward Stratemeyer, set the foundational style with simple, sentimental, and adventure-filled storytelling. The ghostwriters were often experienced writers or journalists, but the series also served as a testing ground for new Syndicate writers. Overall, the continuity and collective authorship behind the “Laura Lee Hope” name helped sustain the beloved vintage charm of the series for over seven decades.
The Edward Stratemeyer Syndicate was responsible for creating many of the most popular children’s and young adult mystery series throughout the 20th century. Aside from their most famous seriesโNancy Drew and The Hardy Boysโthe Syndicate wrote several other mystery series, including:
- The Bobbsey Twins
- Tom Swift (and Tom Swift, Jr.)
- The Dana Girls
- The Rover Boys
- The Perry Pierce Mystery Series
- The Happy Hollisters
Some of these series blended adventure and science fiction with mystery, but all were considered part of the Syndicate’s formula-driven, mystery-themed output. The Syndicate also produced other adventure and juvenile series such as Bomba the Jungle Boy, X-Bar-X Boys, Ralph of the Railroad, Don Sturdy, and more. These series were written under various pseudonyms, with different ghostwriters following the Syndicateโs outlines.
