The Facts
❓Disappearance
Date of the Disappearance*: October 31, 2016
Description: On a chilly Halloween night in 2016, 17-year-old Jeremy Leon Jourdain vanished without a trace in Bemidji, Minnesota, leaving his family and community grappling with unanswered questions for nearly a decade. Jeremy, a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, was a typical teenager—tall, athletic, and dreaming of playing college basketball. Standing at 6’4″ to 6’5″ and weighing around 175 to 225 pounds, with buzzed brown hair, hazel or brown eyes, and a scruffy beard, he was known as a homebody who rarely ventured out except for school or sports. Raised by his grandfather Joseph Jourdain in Cass Lake since infancy, Jeremy’s life seemed ordinary until that fateful evening.
The night began innocently enough. Around 9 p.m., a friend picked Jeremy up from his grandfather’s home in Cass Lake and drove him about 20 minutes to a Halloween party at his older sister Jasmine Jourdain’s house in Bemidji. Jeremy met Jasmine there, and the gathering proceeded as usual. At some point, Jeremy stepped outside with a few friends to smoke cigarettes. Without warning or explanation, he suddenly bolted—running off into the night. Family members and friends gave chase but quickly lost sight of him. He was last seen around midnight in the area of Sixth Street Southeast and Wood Avenue Southeast, wearing a blue and gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and black-and-white Air Jordan shoes. Tracking dogs later followed his scent to that intersection, where it abruptly ended, suggesting he may have entered a vehicle. Authorities have long suspected foul play, but no concrete evidence has emerged.
The next morning, November 1, Jeremy’s grandfather reported him missing to the Bemidji Police Department at 9 a.m. His aunt, Alexandra Tanner, who helped raise him, received a frantic call while driving to work and rushed to the family home. Friends recounted the strange run-off to her, which struck everyone as out of character—Jeremy wasn’t the type to disappear without a word, especially over 16 miles from home. The family immediately began searching miles of roads, but found no sign of him. Police launched an intensive effort, combing the area on foot, interviewing witnesses, and searching vehicles and properties. Over the following months and years, the investigation expanded to include aerial searches with planes, helicopters, and drones; ground operations with dogs; and water sweeps using boats and canoes. The FBI joined forces with local law enforcement, and in 2017, police urged the public—especially deer hunters—to check cabins, outbuildings, and hunting lands. Despite these exhaustive measures, Jeremy’s social media accounts remained silent, and no leads panned out.
The mystery endures, a haunting reminder that one tip could finally bring Jeremy home. If you know anything, speak up—his family deserves answers.
Comparison to Neveah Leigh Kingbird
On the night of October 22, 2021, fifteen-year-old Nevaeh Kingbird spent the evening socializing with friends at a residence near a local trailer park. Something unsettled her that night—witnesses reported she appeared anxious and distressed before suddenly leaving the gathering alone and on foot. Though there were later reports of a possible sighting at her family’s home that evening, there is no verified evidence that Nevaeh ever returned or that anyone saw her after she left the party. To this day, investigators have not determined whether foul play, an accident, or voluntary flight led to her disappearance.
