The Disappearances

Twenty years have slowly passed since that fateful April when a well-respected family of five mysteriously vanished from their home over the space of a few days. During the week of April 11 to April 18, three generations of the Bogdański family disappeared from their Polish home, including the grandmother, Danuta (66); her son Krzysztof (42) and daughter-in-law Bożena (44); and their daughter Małgorzata (15 or 16) and son Jakub (11 or 12).
Krzysztof and Bożena met while attending school together and married in 1985 before settling near their hometown of Łódź in central Poland. As a wedding present, Bożena’s family gifted them with land in Starowa Góra, a small suburb of Łódź, and Krzysztof began constructing their new home on the plot. Krzysztof was quite capable in working with his hands and was able to complete the home with minimal outsourced labor. He financed the construction with cash and it took more than a decade to finish; however, by 1998, the construction was complete and the family began settling into their forever home. The children were thrilled to have their own bedrooms, and Bożena was excited to have a little garden attached in the yard. Not long after, the home also allowed them to take in Krzysztof’s aging mother as well; she had raised her son as a single mother for much of his life and the two were quite close.
In the early 1990s, Krzysztof and Bożena also became small business owners, launching a new production company that manufactured and sold computer parts. They had invested most of their savings into the company and it initially performed quite well. They appeared by all accounts to be successful professionally and personally. Krzysztof handled most of the business and the finances; while Bożena managed things at home. Małgorzata and Jakub were attending private school and excelled as students; both were considered well-behaved and they got along well with their classmates and teachers. Neither had any known issues at school, and no one reported seeing signs of trouble or distress between them. They owned their house outright and were even able to purchase a relatively expensive Volvo S70 as the family’s car. The Bogdanskis had a good reputation within their community and there were no signs of disputes or arguments between themselves or with their neighbors.
The end of the decade however saw their fortunes beginning to shift downhill. The business had begun to struggle and profits declined dramatically, due in no small part to increased competition from cheaper, foreign manufacturers. By 2003, the family was in significant debt as Krzysztof borrowed substantial sums, seeking to keep the company afloat and purchasing real estate which he hoped to sell for a profit. Bożena and Danuta also took out some loans, eventually mortgaging the home. Evidence suggests Krzysztof was also spending money on the stock markets and betting on sports but not to any great success. He shifted his product line to pirated video games and films but failed to adapt quickly enough to the changing market. He also began borrowing money to fund his stock investments. Their debts appear to have been significant and police estimate it may have ranged to as much as a million zlotys (~$250,000). There are rumors that all of this debt may have put Krzysztof and Bożena in the path of black market lenders and loan sharks.
April’s early hints of spring seemed a good time for new beginnings but it was clear that Krzyzstof and Bożena had found themselves in some type of trouble. On April 11, Bożena expressed her concerns to her sister Danuta on the telephone, noting that their situation was ‘bad’ and that she was concerned about what was to come. Unfortunately, she failed to give any details and soon ended the call, telling her sister that she would stop by to visit and explain everything later but could not share anything more at the moment. This was the last time anyone can recall hearing from or seeing Bożena or the children.
A few days later, Bożena’s father Tadeuszcame to visit her and the children at their home. When he arrived, the only person at home was Krzysztof who explained that Bożena and the children were out of town. According to Krzysztof, Bożena was participating in some training courses in Wrocław, a city about two and a half hours away by car. She planned to launch a new tourism shop as a way to restart her career now that the children were older. As it was almost the Easter holiday, their children Małgorzata and Jakub had traveled with her to explore the area. It does appear to have struck Tadeusz as unusual that the children were pulled out of school during the regular school term rather than during an actual holiday; however, it was not strange enough to raise serious concerns.
Once Bożena’s training was complete, Krzysztof and his family would reunite at the home of some old family friends in Germany to celebrate over Easter Weekend. Easter was coming rather late that year, April 20th, and Krzysztof acknowledged that they may stay in Germany a little longer than the holiday to enjoy themselves. Still, the children had to return for school and Bożena’s family did not expect them to be gone too long. Furthermore, cell phones could help them to stay in contact with family and friends.
During the same conversation with Tadeusz, Krzysztof discussed the fact that he was painting the attic and completing some renovations within on the home while his wife and children were away. He then explained that to avoid any issues for his mother, Danuta, who was older and ailing, she was visiting friends in Chojny, a town about half way between Łódź and Wrocław. It appears that he was actually doing construction on the home as neighbors describe him working on the attic; not unusual as Krzysztof was often working on home improvements.
According to reports, Krzysztof also spoke with one of Małgorzata’s friends during this time. She asked why Małgorzata had not been at school, and he appears to have reiterated the same story to her — that Małgorzata and Jakub were with their mother and he planned to join them soon in Germany.
One of the final conversations between Krzysztof and Bożena’s family was when he spoke with Bożena’s sister. Some reports suggest this took place over a phone call while others say she visited the home. When she arrived, the lights were on but Krzysztof initially refused to come to the door. Finally Danuta returned to her vehicle and repeatedly honked the car horn until he came out to speak with her. Danuta and Krzysztof apparently did not have a close relationship and she was not surprised when he spoke to her quite abruptly and refused to let her inside. In either case, Krzysztof kept the conversation short and she was not able to learn anything more about the whereabouts of her sister, niece, or nephew.
At last, on April 18 (Good Friday), a neighbor spoke through the fence to Krzysztof one final time. She later testified that she did not sense anything unusual about him during the conversation and that he had told her the same story he told everyone else. The children and his wife were in Wrocław, his mother was staying with friends, and he was planning to spend the day painting in the attic. Krzysztof has not been heard from or seen since that day.
Bożena’s family became concerned when time passed and none of them had heard from Bożena or the two children. While they were expecting the family to be enjoying their time on vacation, they were surprised not to hear from the children or their mother on Easter Sunday as they normally would at least call with holiday greetings. When family attempted to call them to wish them well for the holiday, no one responded to their messages or calls.
Days turned into weeks and soon it was obvious that something had gone terribly wrong. Małgorzata and Jakub failed to return to school when classes restarted and the family’s business remained closed. No one is answering their phone calls and the is no sign that they ever returned from their holiday trip. Eventually, Bożena’s sister Danuta launches her own personal investigation as she attempts to track down the family’s friends in Germany with whom they were meant to be staying. She soon learns that Danuta (Krzysztof’s mother) had not in fact gone to visit her friends and was also mysteriously missing. The friends in Germany expressed confusion, noting that they had not spoken with Krzysztof or Bożena in years and that they had not heard of any plans to visit them.
Finally, after nearly three weeks of no contact, Bożena’s family reports all five of the Bogdanskis as missing on May 8, 2003.
The investigation into the family’s disappearance was significant; police eventually compiled nearly half a dozen volumes of case files, each totally several hundred pages. The entire situation perplexed the community and rumors began running rampant.
The family had a clean police record; Krzysztof and Bożena were considered a law-abiding, socially respectable couple by their neighbors and social acquaintances. The focus of the investigation appears to have been on Krzysztof’s significant debts and strange excuses for his family’s absence in the days leading up to his own disappearance. Three alternatives seem to have been put forth as potentialities:
- The family was murdered by one or more of their lenders
- The family fled the country deliberately to avoid having to repay their debts (possibly to avoid fraud charges as well)
- Krzysztof murdered his family and then later commuted suicide (or fled) himself.
The remains of the family members have never been found and there is no physical evidence to suggest they were actually killed. The investigation involved a detailed search of their home and property for signs that they either ran away or that something untoward had occurred. The evidence teams swept the home and various tests revealed no evidence of blood. Cadaver dogs were brought in but did not find any evidence of corpses in the area. DNA does not reveal the presence of other persons in the home.
There was no sign of a disturbance in the home; in fact, it appeared the family had simply stepped away. Their clothing and personal possessions were still in the home, including Małgorzata’s diary, wallet, and phone. The diary failed to reveal any new information beyond a passing note that an acquaintance of her father had crossed the border; however, she failed to name the individual or name which border he was crossing. She did express some concerns about her father, worried that he might leave or that he was having problems. Tea was left on the table and there was a phone charger still plugged in the wall in Jakub’s room. Personal items, including makeup and toothbrushes remained in the bathroom, and Danuta’s medications were still there. Dishes remained in the sink, food was still sitting in the refrigerator. Despite the normalcy that permeated most of the home, police did later determine that the family’s computers had all been wiped clean, but there was no sign as to who had erased the hard drives.
Police eventually ruled out a suicide, questioning why Krzysztof would have painted his attic if he was just waiting for the right time to kill himself. There was also evidence to suggest that Krzysztof had been accumulating as much money as he could access in the days prior to their disappearance. He had met with the owner of an auto garage and borrowed around 60,000 zlotys (~ $15,000), offering the Volvo S70 and various bank cards as security. The couple had also maxed out their credit and bank cards earlier in April. Just before they disappeared, three separate banks had contacted police regarding suspicions that the Bogdańskis were involved in loan fraud. They had taken out several loans and mortgages based on the same home; this was illegal, but banks generally lacked sufficient technology at the time to identify such crimes rapidly.
Based on the evidence available, police believe the family had been planning to disappear for some time and were simply running away from their debts. Due to the nature of the situation, all three adults currently have warrants out for their arrest on the basis of loan fraud charges. Those arrest warrants are international and Interpol has been involved.
There are no ticket records to prove the family left Poland on board public transportation (plane, boat, or ferry); and if they did purchase tickets or go through immigration, it was not under their own names. Germany police also monitored their borders and reported no sign of the family entering the country. Krzysztof’s mother Danuta did not own a passport which would have hindered their efforts to leave the country through legal means. Polish police searched various nursing homes and places that housed the elderly or those needing assistance, but there was no sign of Danuta at those places.
While police believe the family may have voluntarily disappeared, Bożena’s family is not convinced. Although some evidence suggests the family planned to leave, there is no evidence that they actually left the country. They also believe that the children, Małgorzata and Jakub, would have contacted them when they came of age. There are no warrants out for the arrest of the children, and they are simply listed as missing.
