Gloria was visiting the beach with her friendsโ family (the Borons) and the group were playing in the water together. Gloria had been joking around by holding her nose and then sinking into the water. After a time, the Boronsโ children warned their mother that Gloria had not come back to the surface. They saw her fling her arms up once and then go under not to come back up.
Although a search was performed and the children had been playing near the shore, there was a strong rip current nearby that pulled things towards the head of the River Derwent. Gloria was not recovered.
