On or about April 29, 1988, 19-year-old Shannon Rose MacLean was hitchhiking with a female friend on Broadway between Evans and Mississippi in Denver. The women got a ride from a white man, described as being in his early 30s with a chubby build. He was between 5 foot 9 and 5 foot 10 with short brown hair, a mustache and yellowing teeth. The man was wearing blue jeans, a blue shirt, white baseball cap with blue trim and dark glasses, and he was driving an older model, brown station wagon with the word “Laguna” on the dash and a “Fish naked” sticker on the rear bumper.
MacLean’s friend told investigators there was a temporary employee badge for Martin Marietta in the vehicle and it appeared the driver may have been living out of his vehicle. MacLean’s friend told investigators she was dropped off in the 5200 block of East Yale, and MacLean stayed with the stranger. Maclean’s friend said she never saw her again.
MacLean’s body was found three months later with no visible signs of trauma in a secluded area near Highway 285 and Surrey Road in Jefferson County.
