Description: Matthew Alan Mullaney, an American student from Massachusetts, disappeared in early 2003 while studying abroad in Florence, Italy. More than two decades later, his whereabouts remain unknown, and the case is still considered unresolved by authorities.

Mullaney had been an undergraduate student at Fairfield University in Connecticut for two years prior to his disappearance. By late 2002, his family believed he needed a change in direction and encouraged him to pursue his interests in music and art. That opportunity came when he enrolled for a semester abroad at the Angel Academy of Ar in Florence. He took a leave of absence from Fairfield and traveled to Italy to study with experienced instructors and immerse himself in the city’s artistic culture.

He arrived in Florence on January 11, 2003, and began classes on January 13. In conversations with his family, Mullaney described the academic environment as demanding, noting that there was a great deal of criticism and little praise (Link), but he remained generally upbeat and said he was enjoying the experience. He reported making friends and occasionally going out with them, including casual outings for pizza. He also spoke of future plans, including a trip to Amsterdam with other international students scheduled for March.

On the evening of January 31, 2003, Mullaney told his roommate that he was going to the Lion’s Fountain, a local Irish pub in Florence. He left his residence around 9:00 p.m. and arrived at the pub alone. According to staff, he spent the evening calmly socializing and did not appear intoxicated. The last known sighting of Mullaney occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on February 1, when he left the pub. It was unclear whether he departed alone or with people he had been speaking to.

At the time of his disappearance, Mullaney was carrying his wallet, which contained his driver’s license, health insurance identification, credit card or cards, and AT&T prepaid international calling cards. He was later reported missing by his roommate, and his family was notified on February 3. Since that time, there has been no use of his calling cards or credit cards, and he has made no contact with family or friends. This silence was considered highly unusual, as he had been in frequent communication with them and appeared to be doing well in the program.

Mullaney has never contacted his family since his disappearance. His relatives have continued searching for information and believe he may have spent time in Ireland. His sister later attended school in Dublin as part of the family’s efforts to follow leads. Despite numerous reported sightings and ongoing interest in the case, no confirmed evidence of Mullaney’s location or activities has emerged.

As of the present time, there have been no new confirmable updates, and Matthew Alan Mullaney is still listed as a missing person.

• Italy, February 2-9, 2003 ➜ a taxi driver in Italy reported driving a man resembling Mullaney to Fiesolana, an area within Florence.
• Italy, February 14, 2003 (Friday) ➜ A waitress at a pizzeria near Mullaney’s former residence in the Campo di Marte area said she saw a man resembling him enter the shop with one male and two females to purchase pizza.
• Italy, February 17, 2003 ➜ A witness reported seeing a man resembling Mullaney in Anzola dell’Emilia, near Bologna. The individual appeared thin, unwell, and unkempt, with a beard. He declined an offer of coffee, which family members later noted aligned with Mullaney’s dislike of coffee. The man initially claimed to be from Holland but asked to speak English when approached.
• UK, April 5, 2003 ➜ A Dutch citizen traveling on a train from Dover to London reported speaking with a man resembling Mullaney. The man said he planned to spend a short time in London before traveling to Dublin, Ireland, to look for work. The witness later stated that the individual matched Mullaney after viewing a police video. Mullaney’s family has said they believe this sighting was credible and may indicate that he left voluntarily.
• Ireland, July 23, 2003 ➜ A woman traveling on a ferry and bus from Holyhead, Wales, to Dublin reported seeing a man resembling Mullaney who appeared uneasy when passengers were told immigration checks would occur upon arrival. After seeing missing person posters upon disembarking in Dublin, she contacted police and later confirmed the identification after reviewing photographs and video footage.
• Ireland, January 3, 2004 ➜ Three Scottish citizens reported encountering a man resembling Mullaney in Galway, Ireland, who asked for directions to a hostel.
• Ireland, January 3, 2004 ➜ On the same day, two separate witnesses in Westport, Ireland, reported meeting an American man who asked them to take his photograph. After seeing a newspaper photo of Mullaney later that day, they contacted police and subsequently confirmed the resemblance after reviewing images and video.
• Ireland, April 26, 2004➜ A bartender at the Leinster Arms pub reported seeing a man resembling Mullaney speaking with two women. She stated she was not completely certain but believed it could have been him.

Matthew Mullaney è un giovane americano scomparso da Firenze il 31 gennaio scorso. Frequentava una scuola d’arte ed è sparito in piena notte senza più dare sue notizie. Il padre, venuto da Boston per cercare di capire cosa possa essere accaduto, una volta entrato nella sua stanza ha trovato il passaporto e tutto in ordine. Mullaney era arrivato a Firenze il 5 gennaio e divideva un appartamento nella zona dello stadio comunale con una coetanea che frequentava la sua stessa accademia e che ha raccontato: “Mi diceva sempre di essere entusiasta di questa scuola. Qualche volta usciva a mangiare una pizza con altri studenti americani come lui. Il giorno della sua scomparsa l’ho incontrato a casa alle 9 di sera. Mi ha detto che stava per uscire per andare in centro. Da allora non l’ho più visto”. Questa informazione è stata confermata da una cameriera di un pub del centro che lo ha visto seduto al banco per tutta la sera. Era entrato da solo e da solo sarebbe uscito, verso le due e trenta, anche se durante la permanenza nel locale avrebbe parlato con altri ragazzi.

“Matthew aveva inviato una email a me e a mia moglie il pomeriggio della sua scomparsa. Diceva semplicemente quanto gli piaceva stare qui a Firenze, che lo studio era molto impegnativo ma che quel venerdì aveva deciso di svagarsi un po’, visto che tutte le sere della settimana restava in casa a studiare e andava a letto alle 10 di sera. Non c’era il minimo accenno a nessun problema. Prima di venire a Firenze sono stato ad Amsterdam perché mi sono ricordato che lui qualche volta mi aveva accennato al suo desiderio di visitare quella città. Là sono andato al consolato americano e poi dalla Polizia olandese”, ha raccontato il padre.

Matthew Mullaney non aveva nessun motivo per andarsene volontariamente. Non si era mai allontanato senza avvertire i genitori, che ora sono particolarmente preoccupati anche per l’assenza di movimenti sul suo conto.

AGGIORNAMENTO
(puntata del 24 febbraio 2003)

Un presunto Matthew Mullaney è stato segnalato in luoghi diversi. Ad Anzola dell’Emilia (Bologna) uno spettatore ha raccontato di averlo incontrato: “Lunedì 17 febbraio alle 8.30 è arrivata una mia conoscente. Ha fatto un urlo e ha detto – Guarda uno a terra lì, che sembra morto. Era tutto ranicchiato. Gli sono andato vicino, con lei, e l’ho chiamato un paio di volte. Dopo un po’ si è voltato, però non rispondeva, allora ho avuto dei dubbi. Gli ho detto – Italiano? E lui ha risposto – No, English. Allora la mia conoscente, che sa parlare un po’ inglese ha parlato con lui”. Gli hanno offerto una tazza di caffè, ma il ragazzo avrebbe risposto che non ne beveva. Lo sconosciuto ha invece accettato una minestra calda, consumata molto rapidamente, con una gran fretta di andarsene, come ha raccontato la ragazza che gliel’ha preparata: “Ha parlato pochissimo. Mi ha detto che veniva dall’Olanda. Non ha voluto neanche un secondo piatto, praticamente è scappato via. Si sentiva in imbarazzo. Sembrava confuso. Però dopo che ha mangiato l’ho visto meglio. Direi che è più magro, ha i capelli più lunghi, non di tanto, e la barba abbastanza incolta con i baffi”. Lo hanno visto andarsene a piedi sulla via Emilia, in direzione di Bologna. A proposito di questa segnalazione, Steven F. Harper, console degli Stati Uniti a Firenze, ha detto: “Ho parlato con la famiglia e mi hanno detto che in effetti lui non prende caffè. Inoltre non è impossibile girare in Europa senza passaporto, si può fare”.

Una seconda segnalazione è giunta da Firenze. Una signora che lavora in una pizzeria che si trova nella zona di Campo di Marte, poco lontano dalla casa in cui viveva Matthew Mullaney, è sembrata molto sicura di averlo riconosciuto: “Venerdì scorso, circa una settimana fa, è venuto a prendere delle pizze. Era in compagnia di un ragazzo e di due ragazze”. Un tassista fiorentino, pur non ricordando esattamente il giorno, ha detto di aver preso a bordo un ragazzo molto somigliante a Mullaney una sera nella settimana tra il 2 e il 9 febbraio, davanti ad un locale. Sarebbe salito in via Fiesolana, nel centro di Firenze.

Non viene scartata l’eventualità di una disgrazia. Si teme che la notte del 31 gennaio scorso Matthew Mullaney possa essere caduto nell’Arno, anche se la cameriera del pub ricordava che il ragazzo non era affatto ubriaco.

Il padre di Matthew Mullaney ha verificato che potrebbe essere attendibile la segnalazione arrivata da Firenze, dove il ragazzo sarebbe stato visto in una pizzeria. Il signor Mullaney, durante la trasmissione del 10 marzo ha commentato: “E’ un comportamento molto strano da parte sua, non lo ha mai fatto e non abbiamo nessuna ragione per capire un comportamento di questo tipo, se lui è davvero vivo e si trova in questa regione. Io cerco di essere più realistico possibile e penso che lui sia vivo. La ragione per cui penso che sia vivo è che non è stato trovato nessun corpo”. A questo proposito ha anche aggiunto: “Tutte le autorità, soprattutto la Polizia, pensano che se gli fosse successo qualcosa si sarebbe trovato il suo corpo. Grazie anche al pubblico di ‘Chi l’ha visto?’, abbiamo avuto diverse segnalazioni da Bologna e da Firenze. Le persone che lo hanno visto pensano che fosse proprio lui… Forse si è collegato con un nuovo gruppo di amici che lo stanno aiutando, oppure chiede l’elemosina per strada. Tutto è possibile. Sappiamo solo che finora non ha utilizzato le sue carte di credito, il suo conto bancario”.
