Circumstances (Circunstancias)

Ana disappeared under unknown circumstances in 2018. According to media reports, Ana was last seen on her birthday in 2018. Her mother, Mrs. Sonia Echenique, had visited the home that Ana shared with her partner in Toledo Chico in order to celebrate Ana’s birthday. When she left, Ana walked with her to the bus stop but this was the last time she had been seen or heard from since.

In October 2019, five families put forward a complaint regarding police negligence in investigating the disappearance of their female relatives. Their protest was held at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Institution and featured the cases of Florencia Barrales Techera of Montevideo; Sandra Cotazzo of Pando; Milagros Cuello Baladán of Pando; Jennifer Mironi; and Ana Paula Navarro of Toledo. The complaint held that police had failed to properly investigate the possible connections between the cases and human trafficking networks. They note that these women were only five out of approximately 40 other cases of missing women in the area between 2017 and 2019. Other accusations include police requiring monetary payment in return for information on a case, supplying false leads, and victimizing the families.
